I am working on a legacy Delphi project, where the current developer on the project has left and I am reworking it. The project is already quite large and comprises many classes. A bit of time ago, I also reworked the UI, using C++Builder and the RAD Studio IDE. However, I am now considering to create an application tool, because several bits of code are shared by the application and the IDE, as well as by the project. I have been looking into writing the tool in Delphi and C++, and I am a bit confused. I can either write a tool application for each project (thus allowing you to develop several tools, one per project), or, I can extend the IDE. There are several things that I'd like to do in the IDE: Generate the projects and forms for the projects (together with the source) Insert snippets of code in the code editor (into the line and line number where the cursor is), plus some inline coloring Find and replace of text From my experience with the IDE, it is quite hard to write the above functionality in an application. In the IDE, this functionality is already built in. Also, it is much more convenient to write an application than extend an IDE. So, I'm a bit confused now, what is the right thing to do: create the tool application or to extend the IDE? A: Check out the new DDX and DDE (Delphi Data Explorer) features of Delphi 2009. It would make it easier to implement your application using the IDE. The DDX and DDE are the result of the Eureka project. A: If you need to do something with the code as you are editing it, then extending the IDE is the way to go. If you need to do something with the code after the IDE, then a plugin for the IDE is what you want.
